KENYON ST NW, DC

CESAR CHAVEZ PREP GYM

DECEMBER, 2013

Located in the historic Bruce School building on Kenyon St in Northwest DC, the Cesar Chavez Public Charter School is a high school with a public policy-centered curriculum. Faced with a growing demand for additional space for PE classes and school sports, the school board decided to add new gym facility.

The existing adjacent parking lot proved to be an ideal site for the proposed gym, allowing the new facility to be fully integrated with the existing building without reducing the existing parking capacity. The red brick façade of the addition relates to the adjacent existing building, while a dark brick reveal creates a clear separation between the old and the new. Inside, exposed steel beams and painted ductwork span the gym ceiling, bright red wall pads wrap the walls, and faux wood sport floors add warmth and a classic look to the recreation space.
