CHURCH ST NW, DC
KEEGAN THEATRE
JUNE, 2015
Keegan is an Irish American Theater troupe based in the historic DuPont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. The renovation of the Church Street Theatre began as simple bathroom renovation, but the project quickly grew in scope to a top-to-bottom building rehabilitation and renovation courtesy of a generous patron.
The focus of the design concept was to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere, true to the theater troupe’s family-run, blue-collar roots, and incorporate their unique artistic style into the historic structure. The result was an industrial infill aesthetic with exposed structure and honest materials. The front of house doubles as a multi-function gathering area with a cocktail bar and concession stand. From the street, the original historic doors remain in their original location; however, the theatre entrance has been relocated to the side of the building and made fully accessible with a new three-stop elevator just beyond the lobby.
